For the best results, we recommend studying one section at a time and using the practice tests to reinforce what you learn.

1. Read the corresponding section of the California Driver’s Handbook from beginning to end.
2. On your first reading, focus on understanding the material rather than trying to memorize everything.
3. Read the section again more carefully, paying particular attention to rules, signs, distances, speeds, and other important details.
4. Open CA DMV Study Pro and take the practice test for that section.
5. Questions answered incorrectly are automatically saved for additional study.
6. Use Favorites to save any other questions you want to review again.
7. After answering a question correctly, read the explanation provided to reinforce the rule or concept.
8. Continue practicing until you are comfortable with the section before moving on to the next one.

Pay Special Attention to Numbers

Many driving rules are based on common sense, but specific numbers can be more difficult to remember. These include speed limits, distances, time limits, and other numerical requirements. Review the Numbers page regularly while preparing for your test.

Test-Taking Tip

If you are unsure of an answer, first eliminate the choices you know are incorrect. If you can narrow the question down to two possible answers, consider which choice is both the safest and the most reasonable for the situation described.

The Settings page can be opened from the app’s main page.

Tap the three-dot menu (⋮), then select Settings.

When starting a New Test, you can choose whether to automatically clear information saved from previous tests:

1. Delete Wrongs — Clears the list of questions answered incorrectly on previous tests.
2. Delete Favorites — Clears questions you previously saved as Favorites.

Leave either option unchecked if you want to keep that list for continued review and study.

From any test section, tap Start to choose how you want to study.

Available Options:

New Test — Handbook In Order
Starts a new test with questions presented in the same order as the handbook material.

New Test — Handbook Shuffled
Starts a new test with the questions presented in random order.

Resume Test in Progress (#)
Continues a test you previously exited before completing. The number shows how many questions remain.

Review Wrongs (#)
Reviews questions you answered incorrectly in a previous test. This option appears only when wrong answers have been saved.

Review Favorites (#)
Reviews questions you have added to Favorites. This option appears only when Favorites have been saved.

Remember: Depending on your Settings, starting a New Test may clear your saved Wrongs and/or Favorites from a previous test.

1. Tap Start and select one of the test options described above.
2. Select an answer for each question.
3. When you select the correct answer, an explanation appears. Read the explanation to reinforce the rule or concept.
4. If you selected an incorrect answer before finding the correct one, the question is automatically added to your Wrongs list.
5. Tap Add to Favorites if you want to save the question for additional review.

Note: Adding questions to Favorites and automatically saving incorrect answers to Wrongs are available only when taking a New Test.

Pause

Tap Pause to stop a test before completing it. Your progress is saved so you can resume the test later.

Stats

Tap Stats to view your progress and completion status for the section.
